Why Index?

Every serious book of nonfiction should have an index if it is to achieve its maximum usefulness...An index should be considerably more than an expanded, alphabetical table of contents. It should also be something other than a concordance of words and phrases.
The Chicago Manual of Style, 14/e, 17.1

A professionally prepared index adds not only to the usefulness of a book, it adds bottom line value as well:

  • Readers want quick access to specific information an index provides.
  • Book buyers, librarians, researchers, and college professors often make purchasing decisions based on the usefulness of the index.
  • Readers will recommend a book with a well-prepared index, and will be sure to mention a less than useful index as well!
  • Many libraries will not buy a book without an index.
